Easter holiday bed and breakast accommodation in Boston Linconshire

Well it’s been a long cold winter so far in the UK and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to the start of spring andsome sunshine and warm weather again.

Hazel and I have been busy over the winter putting the finishing touches to the refurbishments to Boston Lodge and preparing for the first bank holiday of the year, the busy Easter holiday week and also the summer season at our bed and breakfast accomodation in Boston Lincolnshire.

Many people will be heading to the east coast and touring the fens and we look forward to welcoming returning vistitors and many new ones over the easter holidays and summer season.

A Tribute to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the brave WW2 pilots.

I was walking across the car park at Boston lodge recently when the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight flew directly over our Guest House.

As I walked down the lane I starting thinking of the heroic actions that must have taken place over this area of Lincolnshire and the Fens during World War 2.

I started wondering what would have happened if we had lost the Battle of Britain.

When i returned I started researching about the brave pilots on the Internet and found this Battle Of Britain Memorial Fligh tribute Video below… “Lest we forget”.

I got goosebumps watching and listening to it. I enjoyed it so much I thought I would share it with you.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and only a short drive from Boston Lodge.

Our Guest house is ideally situated for visiting the RAF Airfields in Lincolnshire.

One of the many RAF Airfields in Lincolnshire is RAF Coningsby. As well as being the home of the famous Battle of Britain Memorial flight with the Lancaster bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane. Conningsby is also one of the airbases housing the Typhoon fighter jet. They can be seen on a regular basis over the Lincolnshire skies.

Boston Lodge Golf Outings

No visit to Lincolnshire to play Golf would be complete without a trip to Woodhall Spa, home of the English Golf Union and venue for some of the biggest amateur events on the calendar. Simply sensational! The Local Boston West Golf Centre is a Proprietary club, which prides itself on its friendly and family atmosphere. They have everything you would expect from a modern progressive Golf Club and actively encourage non-members to visit and use the up to date and extensive facilities.

Boston Golf Club, Founded in 1900, moved to its present location at Cowbridge in 1962. Located at the cross over of two water courses, the Boston Golf Club provides a parkland oasis amongst the fertile Lincolnshire Fens. By definition water comes into play at a number of holes and the course provides a challenge to both the beginner and more experienced golfer alike. In addition to the challenging 18 hole course, a covered four bay driving range and practice facilities are available for visitors to use, along with a practice bunker and putting green. The Clubhouse provides an informal and friendly welcome in which to relax after your challenging round. Members and staff alike extend a warm welcome to all visitors, whether coming as an informal group, as a Society or on a more formal organised Corporate Day.

Boston Lodge Fishing Parties

There is some fantastic Fishing in and around Sleaford, Lincoln, Boston and the Lincolnshire Fens. We have provided only a brief description of the rivers and fishing in the area. We will leave the exact stuff to the angling experts!

Fishing in Lincolnshire Rivers

Witham Navigable Drains
Fishing is allowed along the Drains, and only the standard Environment Agency rod licence is required to fish (i.e., no additional permits or tickets required). You will hopefully catch one or all of the following coarse fish – bream, tench, perch, chub  and pike.

River Witham
Many stretches are administered by angling associations. Grimsby & District Amalgamated Society of Anglers covers much of the navigable waterway, and there is also good fishing in the upper, unnavigable reaches.

Fossdyke Navigation
11 miles of the Fossdyke Navigation between Torksey and Lincoln can be fished for a number of coarse fish varieties, mainly roach and bream, but also chub, perch and tench. The canal is managed by British Waterways and details on tickets can be obtained from the local BW office.

River Ancholme
Roach and bream are the main catches in the River Ancholme, and now perch too. You will also see rudd, carp, chub, spined loach, sea trout, grayling and river, brook and sea lamprey.

Bourne Eau
The river can be fished on both banks forom May Bridge to Tongue End. Perch Roach Tench and Pike can be caught. You will need a valid Environment Agency rod licence to fish at this venue.

River Glen
The River Glen flows from west of Spalding to the tidal section of the River Welland at Surfleet Seas End.
A well distributed and wide variety of fish is to be found in the Glen, especially perch, pike, chub, gudgeon, rudd, roach and carp.

River Humber
Sea fishing along the Humber bank is free, and along foreshore to Tetney Lock. There are plaice, codling, dabs, flounders and eels to be caught.

River Nene
Fishing is popular on the Nene, especially on the north bank, and there are good chub grounds near Peterborough. The river is brimming with carp and tench; bream and roach are less likely due to little movement of the water. The River Nene is controlled by The Peterborough and District Angling Association.

South Forty Drain

There is plenty of choice for fishing in Lincolnshire’s drains in the Boston area. The fish in these waterways are Bream, Roach, Tench, Perch, Skimmers, Pike, and some Carp. Most of these fishing sites require that you belong to the Boston and District Angling Association.

River Welland
This area has a reputation for the quality of its’ fishing,Fishing is very popular in the South Holland waterways area, available on all rivers and most drains. These waterways have a well distributed and wide variety of fish, with perch, bream, pike, chub, gudgeon, rudd, roach and carp most common. Stamford has high numbers and quality of many fish including roach, chub, tench, bream and even eels. Downstream of Market Deeping is excellent for chub and roach, as is upstream although access is limited here.

There is the Barge local pub and restaurant in the village for après fishing refreshments and meals in the evening. The center of Boston is only a few minutes away.

Historic Boston

Boston has a fascinating history, through the centuries it has been a major port , trading with Europe, a religious centre in the thirteenth century, and continues to the present day as a thriving market town.

Boston is dominated by the beautiful St Botolph’s Church. It is locally, and affectionately known as “the Stump” and for centuries has been used as a navigation aid by seafarers. St Botolph’s is famous for being England’s largest parish church with the highest church tower.

The Guildhall Museum in South Street dates back to 1450, when it was built as a hall for the Guild of St Mary. In 1546, the Guildhall became the Town Hall for the newly formed Corporation of Boston. It housed both the prison and the Courtroom as well as the Council Chambers . Boston’s most famous ‘prisoners’ were the Pilgrim Fathers who were arrested and tried in 1607 before eventually escaping to Holland and then on to Massachusetts, where they became the Governors of the new town of Boston. Visitors can see the very cells in which they were imprisoned and imagine what those Puritan founders of the modern USA must have felt!

Boston not only has the tallest church tower, but also the tallest working windmill! Maud Foster Mill, built in 1819 is still used to ground flour and it is open to the public three days a week (extra day during the summer ). There are remarkable views of Boston from the mill tower. Visitors can enjoy homemade cakes and vegetarian dishes in the mill tea rooms.
